Here’s an interesting thought experiment: what would a map look like if we divided land the same way our national wealth is divided? Here I included two countries for contrast: The United Kingdom and the United States. If we divide the USA’s land by wealth, the top 1% would have everything west of the Rocky Mountains in addition to Texas, Louisiana, and Florida–a large proportion of the country. Adding up the top 10%, they would hold nearly everything west of the Mississippi River and south of Tennessee. Compare this to the UK, where the top 1% would fill half of Scotland, and all of North Ireland and the whole top 10% would barely get to Northern England. An interesting comparison.
